This program aims to create a dialogue and share information to help Cubans make educated decisions about the future of their country.
Radio and TV Martís’ popular series Avanza Cuba (Cuba Forward) returns Wednesday, August 21, with a special edition examining Cuba’s educational system, its history, and its future.

This is the first edition of the popular broadcast since the Office of Cuba Broadcasting was damaged by a fire last April. The show titled Avanza Cuba: Myth and Future will feature a panel of experts including Graciela Cruz-Taura, Professor of Spanish Literature at Florida Atlantic University; Osmel Rodriguez, Professor of Spanish Language at Miami Dade College and St. Thomas University, who previously taught in Cuba; Exilda Arjona Plamer, a parent with a degree in pedagogy; and Karina Galvez Chiu, Professor of Economics, in Cuba.

Host Karen Caballero will moderate the discussion exploring the realities of the educational system in Cuba today as well as its potential. The program will air on radio, television and online at martinoticias.com. Audience members are also invited to participate by following @AvanzaCuba on Twitter, liking the “Avanza Cuba” page on Facebook, or emailing avanzacuba@gmail.com.

Avanza Cuba premiered in September 2011, featuring prominent Cuban bloggers, professors, and students discussing new media and the role of technology in Cuba. The program incorporates all of the Martís’ radio, TV, and online streams and aims to create a dialogue and share information to help Cubans make educated decisions about the future of their country.

Avanza Cuba moves beyond politics to foster discussion of topics of interest to the audience, including creating opportunities to use social media and fostering Cuban entrepreneurship.

In response to the first Avanza Cuba program, notable Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez Tweeted: “A lot of people calling me from the provinces after today’s show. Incredible how many Cubans listen to the ‘forbidden radio.’”

The Martís are operated by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, part of the independent U.S. government agency, the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).
