The Office of Cuba Broadcasting’s TV Martí has received three Emmy nominations for its special programs La Nueva Cuba de Las Damas de Blanco (The New Cuba of the Ladies in White), La Caridad Nos Une (The Virgin Unites Us) and Sueno Olimpico (Olympic Dream).
“To be recognized by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is a great honor,” said Carlos Garcia-Perez, Director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. “Our journalists work hard to provide the people of Cuba with high-quality news and information programs that are not otherwise available to them in the press-restricted environment. These nominations reaffirm that we are on the right track.”
Winners will be announced in an award ceremony on Saturday November 23rd in Hollywood, Florida. This is the third year in a row that Martí programs have been honored with at least one Emmy nomination.
The nominations are as follow:
La Nueva Cuba de Las Damas de Blanco (The New Cuba of the Ladies in White)
In this 30-minute TV Martí special, members of the internationally known human rights group “Ladies in White” shared the pain of having their loved ones imprisoned during Cuba’s Black Spring in 2003 and explained their efforts to bring change to Cuba through peaceful opposition. This program is nominated in the “Politics/Government-Program” category and was produced by Tatiana Riquelme, directed by Janet Lomba and edited by Caridad Rubido.
La Caridad Nos Une (The Virgin Unites Us)
On the occasion of the feast day of Our Lady of Charity, this half-hour special reviewed the story of the first appearance of the patron saint of Cuba and examined the importance of the Virgin Mary in Cuban culture and daily life. The special also covered how this saint unifies Cubans around the world and how they celebrate the annual feast day. The saint is said to be a symbol for thousands that have taken to the sea to leave the communist nation. This program is nominated in the “Religion-Program” category and was produced by Tatiana Riquelme, directed by Janet Lomba and edited by Caridad Rubido.
Sueno Olimpico (Olympic Dream)
Martí cameras followed Olympic gymnast Danell Leyva in this half-hour special, as he shared insight into the intense preparation and sacrifices required to make his Olympic dream a reality. Leyva, who won the bronze medal in 2012 and was trained by his step-father, tells about his early days growing up in Matanzas, Cuba, and his family’s dedication to his success. This special is nominated in the Sports-One-Time Special category and was produced by Tatiana Riquelme, directed by Janet Lomba and edited by Caridad Rubido. Field Producer Tomas Regalado, Sports Anchor Bobby Salamanca and photographer Rene Lopez are also nominated.
